Dr. Rapaport’s office and Coolspa are thrilled to announce that we now offer Cellfina™, a new, FDA-cleared technology for the minimally invasive treatment of cellulite. This revolutionary treatment is clinically proven to significantly improve the appearance of wrinkly, fatty skin. Follow up studies have shown results to be durable at three years, and we have reason to expect these results to be permanent. Learn more about our NYC Cellfina treatment below.
Cellfina combines an established procedure known as “subcision” with advanced proprietary technology. Subcision is subcutaneous (under the skin) incisional surgery, a minor surgical procedure most commonly used to treat scars and wrinkles. Cellfina’s innovative technology provides a safe, effective method to improve the appearance of cellulite with precise, reproducible, long-lasting results. Better still, improving the appearance of cellulite typically requires just a single treatment.
The Cellfina system is the only FDA approved minimally invasive treatment that has been clinically shown to improve the appearance of cellulite for a minimum of three years. It treats the structural cause of cellulite – connective bands woven through fat in the buttocks and thighs -- to give the skin a smoother, firmer, healthier appearance.
This system uses a specialized handpiece that makes it possible to access the tissue precisely. The small subcision device is used to treat the bands that cause the lumpy appearance of cellulite in a procedure classified as minimally invasive.
At Rapaport Plastic Surgery, we offer Cellfina treatments in Manhattan. This is a one-time, minimally invasive treatment, performed in the doctor’s office. The typical Cellfina procedure takes less than one hour to perform.
The first step is to mark the cellulite-dimpled areas of skin to be treated. Next, a numbing agent is applied to ensure your comfort during treatment. A suction stabilizer is used to make the treatment areas smooth and taut. Finally, Cellfina’s minimally invasive, needle-sized device is used to treat the connective bands just below the surface of the skin that are causing puckering and the lumpy texture of cellulite. The treatment causes the bands to release, so the skin can smooth itself out in as little as three days.
Immediately after treatment, you can go on about your day, although you may need to take it easy for 24 hours. You may experience minor soreness, tenderness, or bruising after the procedure, but these symptoms should subside within a few days.
Cellulite is caused by the herniation (bulging) of fat through fibrous connective tissue (fibrous septae) under the skin. These fibrous septae anchor the skin to the underlying tissue (this causes the dimples), while the fat pushes through. This can lead to a dimpled, wrinkled appearance to the skin that many women are familiar with. The cause of cellulite is not yet completely understood, but a wide variety of factors including hormones, genetics, and metabolism may play a role in its formation.
Cellulite is much more common in women than men, and it is estimated that up to 90% of post-pubertal women will experience cellulite at some point in their lives.
The Cellfina™ system treats the primary structural cause of cellulite, the connective bands woven throughout fat in the thighs and buttocks. These tight bands pull down the skin, creating the puckering you see on the surface. Similar to a rubber band under tension, once released, the treated skin bounces back to smooth itself out.
Cellfina™ does not involve general anesthesia or prolonged downtime. It relies on a minimally invasive device to disrupt the cellulite-causing bands just beneath the surface of the skin.
Most patients see reduced cellulite in as little as 3 days.
In a pivotal study, patient satisfaction was 85 percent at three months, 94 percent at one year and 96 percent at two years, surpassing the patient satisfaction rates of other leading cellulite treatments.*
*Satisfaction rates were evaluated separately and are not based on direct comparisons among treatments.
While most patients can return to their regular activities within 24 hours, there may be some soreness and bruising. These side effects resolve quickly. The most common side effects reported by patients in the FDA-cleared pivotal study were soreness, tenderness and bruising.
Just three days after treatment, patients rated their pain as minimal (2.7 on a scale of 0 to 10; 0=no pain, 10=extreme pain) and most (82 percent) felt pain only with touch or pressure to the area treated. This minimal pain improved quickly. More than 90 percent of patients had no bruising at four weeks.
At Coolspa in New York, we are committed to offering our patients the full array of cutting-edge treatments to help them achieve their body contouring goals. The addition of Cellfina™ New York allows us to offer something we’ve never been able to before – a proven, effective, and long-lasting treatment for the improvement of stubborn cellulite.
Unlike medspas, where you may be seen by a consultant driven by commissions to make sales, at Coolspa your cellulite evaluation and treatment will be performed by New York plastic surgeon David Rapaport or consummate cosmetic surgeon Dr. Smith, both of whom have extensive, proven experience in performing body contouring.
Cellulite removal is an area in which NYC-based surgeon Dr. Rapaport has been practicing for decades. Dr. Smith has completed demanding fellowships that ensure his artistry and skill in all aspects of aesthetic improvement. In contrast, dermatologists are trained to treat skin and have little to no training or experience in body contouring, and treatments of the layers underlying the skin. It simply makes sense to have an expert in body contouring providing your body contouring cellulite treatment.
Additionally, by having your evaluation and treatment carried out by a true body contouring expert, our Cellfina Manhattan treatment may well be recommended in combination with other safe and effective body contouring techniques such as liposuction and/or fat grafting. And of course, your entire treatment can usually be performed in one sitting, under the safety and comfort of IV (twilight) anesthesia, delivered by our board certified anesthesiologists.
